Episode 5 of Australia’s Next Top Model saw the girls cover uncharted territory both mentally and physically. The girls had the huge task of impressing one of Australia’s most iconic female models Gemma Ward in a screen test. They also braved the elements with a shoot at the beautiful and iconic Cradle Mountain in Tasmania.
In today’s industry models need to have a range of skills and are required to not only perform for still images but also for TV and film.
Screen tests can be daunting and stressful as often time you are performing for the client. In our experience the key is to be energetic, confidant and the have ability to improvise. The girls had to perform in front of Gemma and Jen, and while there were some slip-ups, they all pulled it together and saw out the challenge. We were really proud to see them push past mistakes, not letting it faze them. Daisy showed some real skill in this challenge and got a perfect challenge score.
As a model, traveling and shooting on location is a lot of fun and one of great parts of the job. However, one of the tough things for new models to learn is that you have to shoot summer in winter and winter in summer. This means shooting swimwear in freezing temperatures and layering up jumpers and coats in 30 + degree days. This can be really challenging.
The girls were up against the elements while shooting at Cradle Mountain. Wearing swimwear in 4 degree weather with some of the girls in freezing water! It was great to see no complaints with everyone doing their best to get the shot. From a client’s point of view, this is really impressive. Although the odds were stacked against them we saw some of the best shots of the competition with Aleyna getting a perfect score with three 10’s from the judges.
But with such strong competition, one poor performance can mean you’re going home and sadly this week it was Jessie who went home. It seemed like Jessie had more to give. She definitely has the potential to go on and have a great career, so keep your eye out for her!
Next week, girls take the plunge into extreme model week where their limits will be tested!
