Smart casual is one of those dress codes that means so many things to so many people. This is particularly evident across generations. Given the Smart Casual dress code pops up more than most, it’s one you want to be able to handle.
Our best tip to nail this often troubling dress code comes from thinking about the word order. The smart outweighs the casual. So, let’s say the basic outfit is made up of 4 items; Blazer, Shirt, Pants and Shoes. To hit the mark, go for 3 out of 4 pieces covering the smart category and 1 of the 4 pieces, casual. We love the classic swap of jeans in place of slacks. It’s pretty safe, especially when you wear darker denim (dark denim is definitely the go and avoid anything with rips or distressing even if it’s designer). Also consider adding colour. Whether it be in the form of a blazer or shirt, Smart Casual gives you a bit of room for experimenting with piece you mightn’t be game enough to take to the office.
